GREW UP ON A TIGHTROPE, LEARNED TO SMILE
EVEN WHEN I WAS FALLING DOWN
gray - originally black
eye color: amber
height and weight: 5'9", 170 pounds
distinguishing features: He has a beard and sideburns
face claim: Iroh - Avatar: The Last Airbender
appearance: Iron is pretty old, and that is obvious in his appearance. He's a little bit . . . soft around the edges. Or, in more obvious terms, Iroh's pretty pudgy. He's grown soft in his old age, and he's gained a bit of a gut as of late. His hair is gray and faded, though always fairly well maintained, with his beard and sideburns. His eyes, like those of most of his family, are amber and bright, despite the rest of his appearance being rather faded. He very, very rarely dresses formally, and can usually be found wearing just a brown, loose shirt and jeans. He does love to wear red, however, and whenever Iroh has to dress formally, he will almost certainly wear red.[/ul][/blockquote]
OUT WHERE YOUR TROUBLES CAN‘T FIND YOU
OUT WHERE YOU LEAVE THEM ALL BEHIND
tea, tea, more tea (especially ginseng and jasmine), his nephew, kids in general, teaching, fire, music, chess, telling jokes and stories, flirting
dislikes: coffee, adults, stupid people, games that don't require strategy, people who don't have open minds, people who don't laugh at his jokes
personality: If you had to describe Iroh in one word, it would be brilliant. If you were allowed three it would be: 'brilliant, but unconventional.' Iroh is very smart. He's brilliant with anything that requires strategy, and when he was involved in the army, he rarely lost battles. Indeed, Iroh was a great strategist, orchestrating battles that brought down cities. However, after the death of his son, Iroh retired from the military, eventually returning home to SOHT to become a teacher. However, after his son's death, Iroh became a lot more . . . odd. He grew potted plants and experimented with music and completely lost his interest in fighting. Now, Iroh tends to be a pacifist, much more inclined to simply go with the flow than anything else.
Iroh tends to be a bit lazy, but don't let that fool you. When push comes to shove, Iroh can and will push back. He is still quite the capable fighter, though perhaps not as good as he once was due to a lack of practice, his old age and his body in general. However, Iroh prefers to solve things in a nonviolent manner. Most of the time, though, Iroh would rather not do anything. He likes to pamper himself. It is also another aspect of his laziness that Iroh simply doesn't hold grudges. He's too lazy for that. Instead, Iroh focuses his energy on other things, rather than wasting his time on holding grudges.
Iroh is a silly man. He likes to tell jokes. However, most of jokes tend to have a bit of wisdom in them, because beneath that silliness, Iroh is a wise man. He can look beyond the surface, and see what's beneath. He's seen a lot of the world. He's seen a lot of how people can treat other people, and to that end, Iroh can offer a bit of wisdom for almost any situation, from losing a family member to break up with your girlfriend. Iroh loves to give advice to lost students. However, his advice tends to be rather cryptic. Iroh expects those that he gives advice to to figure out what it means on their own, and he will often look on proudly when they figure out what it means and take his advice once they have figured it out.
A very friendly man, Iroh's always got a smile for someone. He will talk with anyone, from student to teacher to random stranger on the street. He especially likes to talk with women. Despite Iroh's age, he's a major flirt. He'll flirt with any woman, from those older than him to those far younger than him. However, largely, Iroh doesn't mean it. His wife was the only woman for him, and after her death, Iroh is almost entirely uninterested in the women around him. Still, he flirts with them shamelessly. However, he tends to do his best to make it clear if anyone should try to take it further that he is simply not interested.
Iroh loves to learn about new things, whether those new things are cultures or musical interests or even botany, which is Iroh's favorite thing of all. Iroh is also very accepting of the different viewpoints that he learns about as well. Other people are allowed to have their opinions, in Iroh's mind, and he isn't going to force his views on others. Instead, he will simply accept their viewpoints as valid and move on to learn about new things. Iroh especially loves to learn about botany. For a time, he ran a tea shop where he made his own tea from the plants that he grew, and Iroh's love for plants has not faded with time.[/ul][/blockquote]
DEAR MOM AND DAD, I‘LL SEND MONEY
I‘M SO RICH THAT IT AIN‘T FUNNY
Azulon Ten, deceased
father: Ilah Ten, deceased
siblings: Ozai Ten, 54 years, military
others:
wife: Rea Ten, deceased
son: Lu Ten, deceased
nephew: Zuko Ten, --, student
niece: Azula Ten, --, student
hometown: New York, New York
history: Iroh was born in New York City. However, his father was in the military, so they didn't stay there for long. Iroh spent a lot of time hopping around with his family. They never stayed anywhere for long. They were always being transferred from one place to another. When his father, Azulon, was deployed to fight, Iroh and his mother were left alone. Iroh was barely four years old and he didn't know why all of a sudden, he was alone, and though his mother heaped him with attention, it wasn't enough for Iroh. He was overjoyed when his father returned home about six months later.
Time passed in a fairly normal manner, for the most part. Iroh was ten when his mother became pregnant with her second child, and she brought Ozai Ten into the world about nine months later. Iroh was delighted to have a child to baby, and he took care of Ozai as much as his mother did. He didn't make very many friends as a child, despite his friendly disposition. Iroh tended to be a bit violent as a child and he fought a lot. He had a violent streak, much like his father, and it was expected that Iroh would enter into the military from a young age. He would have to burn off that violence somehow, wouldn't he? But his violence made Iroh a troublesome child. He had a brilliant mind, even when he was young, and couple that with a violent streak, and well, you had a handful.
The Ten family finally found somewhere permanent to stay in Wisconsin, near SOHT, to which Iroh had been accepted. His family was fiercely proud of him, and as Azulon was a graduate of that school as well, he pushed Iroh to succeed there, expecting that Ozai would attend SoHT as well as soon as he was old enough. Iroh was 15 when they moved there for his first year, and Ozai was little more than 5.
Iroh attended SOHT, working hard and double majoring as a warrior and as a language student. His father wanted him to major as a warrior, but Iroh wanted more than that, so Iroh majored as a language student as well. It was a lot of work, but Iroh succeeded, even beginning to date a fellow first year named Rea. Their relationship remained strong for the next six years, and when Iroh was 22, he became the proud father of his own son, named Lu, shortly after he entered into the military. His brother graduated from SOHT with flying colors when Iroh was 30, and he applauded his brother happily at his graduation. Ozai entered into the military like his brother before him, and Ozai shone there as well. They were both skyrocketing through the ranks, Ozai because of the fact that he was an excellent commander and very power hungry, and Iroh because he was vicious and because he was simply very intelligent.
Through it all, he was the best father for his son that he could be, given the time constrains. When Iroh was 37, his son began to attend SOHT as well, continuing a family tradition that was by now 3 generations long. Iroh allowed his son to do what he wished, and his son also majored as a warrior, again continuing a family tradition. Lu entered into the military as well when he graduated, but he was sent into combat shortly after he graduated and at 22 years of age, Lu Ten was killed. Iroh was 44 and absolutely devastated. He was honorably discharged, and Iroh returned home to his wife, who consoled him. However, later that year, Rea was also killed, murdered when a man broke into their house and found her home while Iroh was out shopping. He never forgave himself for that.
At 45, he returned to his old home, SOHT, pulled himself together, and became a teacher. He began teaching as an English Writing teacher, and slowly began to climb through the ranks. At 47, he became a teacher of the Second Year class, Parts of Languages. During that year, his nephew Zuko was burned by his father when the duo got in a fight, and Zuko was driven from his home by Ozai. Iroh welcomed his nephew into his home, and has yet to send the student of SOHT back home. Three years after Zuko entered his home, he became the teacher of the Third Year class, Rare Languages. From there, Iroh became the teacher of Writing Styles and then the director of the Language Department. In 2012, when Rufus Shinra became headmaster, Iroh became the Dean due to his extensive contributions to the school. His niece and nephew currently attend the school as well.
He has no intentions of retiring just yet, despite his age, and intends to continue with his new job for many years to come. After all, he has a while before he'll be dying, so why should he retire just yet?[/ul][/blockquote]
